Jill Brougher
My work is an investigation into the subtleties of light and form. Each shell is initially gathered or gifted, then brought back to my studio to be composed and staged.

I work with the shell as subject because of it’s contradictory nature. Conserved within it’s form are expressions of duality; intimacy/distance, fragility/durability, predictability/chance. It speaks of ancient origins and transmutations, connecting me to a more serene and sensuous world.

Although I work from direct observation my main goal is to enhance the repetition of curvilinear form and to create the illusion of deep atmospheric space within the shell's miniature interior. The result is an image meant to evoke contemplation and poetic memory.
